Blood test service is now very poor
November 16, 2015
Average wait time for blood tests in this New Health Service building is over 1 hour. The building is very nice however the service is very poor. My wife has visited 4 times in the last 3 weeks and every time the wait is over 1 hour. Staff shortage is obvious. A waste of time making an official complaint, no one at WSH is listening. If anyone is interested then do a survey of patients leaving after a blood test and ask how happy they are with this service. New building, same old issues !!

Good to be treated like a normal person and have everything explained without feeling stupid
Culturally sensitive GPs?
October 6, 2015
I have had a family GP for many years who is about to retire. I prefer to wait two or three weeks for an appointment with him because I know that when I do see him he understands me, my cultural framework and community etc. It is comforting and straightforward. I am aware that when seeing other GPs at the surgery that I am not approached in a culturally sensitive manner. That perhaps the approach is more brusque and non personal than I am culturally used to. This inhibits the sense of ease I need to make an appointment and talk to the GP about issues concerning my personal health. As a service provider I am constantly aware of being culturally sensitive towards others and ensuring I consider difference of commonly held values and beliefs. I am not entirely sure that when I see the GP I am assigned when making an appointment that I am going to be faced with someone who makes these same considerations in their approach to my care. I am a middle aged female who has never had to question whether I was heard or not in a culturally sensitive way, but it occurs to me that there are times when I have not had this experience and I believe it relevant to both mine an the care of others within our wider community.

Cut finger on a power saw, I bandaged it up at home and went to Drs the next day they sent me to WSH there was no transport and buses had stopped. Had to try phone round for a lift ended up being a 5 hour round trip and all I got was a plaster. WSH told me to go back to GP for dressing which I called them and they told me to buy more dressing.
Phlebotomy needs to be open longer

I arrived for a blood test early one morning but at 0845 no one had been called (I was about 20th in the queue I think) so I had to leave to go to work. I came back the next day at 1545 only to find out the service had closed. I tried again the next day at 1500, waited nearly 45 minutes then was told I was lucky to be seen as the service was due to close to enable samples to be sent to WSH. Lucky?? Just how is a working person supposed to access this service? I left work early two days running and I am lucky I could. The staff are very good but I think they realise they are swimming against the tide!
