Hospital discharge

unknown
August 3, 2020
When having residents discharged from the hospital they confirm via telephone that the resident has had a negative COVID test however it is NOT printed on the discharge note. This is something that needs to be looked at urgently.

I had to see an ENT doctor - the Out Patients Department was immaculately clean and very well staffed. Staff were friendly . The doctor was professional and helpful. A very positive experience during a worrying time.

Difficulties getting hearing aid batteries

Hearing aid services
May 15, 2020
My mother was given a hearing aid by the hospital and was told to come back for replacement batteries which is very difficult considering she lives 17 miles from the hospital, doesn't drive and can only walk short distances. By chance we saw a poster in a local supermarket offering a clinic for batteries and then found out from them that a surgery in Mildenhall, which is much closer has them available too. It would be much better if patients were told at the time of being given the hearing aid all the options available to them not just about the hospital. If batteries could be prescribed through the local doctors it would help as they could then be picked up with prescriptions or even delivered to the door as there are various delivery options available. Better information needs to be provided to patients.

Thank you for your feedback.

We have contacted our Audiology Department who have confirmed that there are a number of ways that patients can obtain replacement hearing aid batteries or get hearing aids repaired. There are leaflets available in the Department about this, and our website has a patient information section which explains what the options are, as well as a list of local clinics and GP surgeries from which you can obtain batteries. There is also a postal service which is particularly useful in this current climate.

I apologise that this information was not explained to your mother, but if you have any queries please see our website:

No communication between patient and relative

ICU
May 13, 2020
Lack of communication between patients and relatives, when hospital called my dad they got his name wrong and called him by another families name, nearly gave us confidential information about another patient. No updates given until the next day in the afternoon after my mum had an op the previous night. Card sent through your website “keeping in touch” and family sent cards in post but mum has still not received them and this was weeks ago. Wish I could move her to another hospital but she is too poorly, she is relying on these people to look after her and they can’t get her my dads name right.

I had to go to the Emergency department at WSH mid-evening on the 13th April with a dislocated shoulder - painful to the point of distress. Despite the extra burden of Covid19-related work the staff were friendly, empathic and informative throughout. It was a great relief to find myself in their effective and caring hands. Pain relief given, shoulder put back into joint and discharged before midnight. Thank you everyone and thanks to the whole NHS!

Despite Covid-19 service was excellent and everything was very well organised - I could not have been
better treated.

Staff ok, but lack of empathy

Gynaecology
March 17, 2020
No notification before appointment of a scan to be performed, so no full bladder
Scan performed by trainee without informing and then reperformed by trained staff
Long wait to be seen
Doctor wanted to perform Hystoscopy there and then .... felt pressured to comply, but didn't ... later found out that without proper anaesthetic this procedure is horrendous and hospital gets financial incentive by government for doing it as outpatient and it is being discussed in Parliament ....
Left hospital in a state of anxiety and feelings of being a nuisance

Efficient but not much information given

Gastrointestinal and Liver services
March 14, 2020
I do not understand why a canula was inserted to give me a tranquilliser before a gastro endoscopy and then I was told by the surgeon it would be better to have a local anaesthetic and it was given before I could answer. Later the unnecessary canula was removed. Why waste time putting one in if the person in charge doesn't want it used? Waste of a nurse's time

No Deaf awareness or Accessible Information S

Wards and outpatients
March 13, 2020
Deaf man in ward for two weeks and staff didn’t get a British Sign Language Interpreter in. Wife had outpatient appointments and staff didn’t call for interpreter. This is clearly a requirement under the AIS, it is appalling to ignore a Deaf patient's communication needs. This is not equality
