Cold and Hayfever ramps up the symptoms
September 28, 2023
My son is 5 years old and he has had to experience a couple of overnight hospital stays with severe wheezing. Thankfully they now have got him on the right medication which seems to be helping a lot. I find colds and hayfever ramps up his symptoms of asthma. We have an asthma plan and we are comfortable with it. We are happy with the speed of the response from professionals , we know that he can't get a formal asthma diagnosis until he is 6 years old, but we are nearly there and they seem as through they are treating him for asthma already. I would say that the staff in the Childrens outpatient clinic are wonderful. We used to go to Essex hospital when we lived there and we find the communication is better at this hospital.

My knee replacement should've been done in October but with all the strikes I've now been told that it's unlikely that it will now happen that early.

Maternity

When I was in labour I had difficulty convincing the midwofe to check things were progressing as they didn't want to check me. I was 4 weeks early and by the time they checked me the first time I was 8 cm dilated. I was then moved quickly to a delivery suite.
Limited support

When I went in to have my baby I was not supported well by staff. I have autism and staff didn't really know how to handle the situation and they hadn't sought advice from the LD liaison nurse either. We weren't told about the discounted parking also available either.
Unclear message

When I called the early miscarriage team the message on the phone didn't make it clear I could potentially wait 8 hours for a response. When this happened and I was worried all day I didn't know what to do. I did finally get a call back and was offered a scan but it was a very difficult day.
Very accommodating

The scans and consultations have all been good to get and I've not had to wait long for any appointments to come through. Staff are very accommodating and I've been able to attend appointments with my family to be sure I understand everything being said. Staff have given us information about support organisations we can contact too.
Excellent digital ward

I was discharged to the digital ward and was really impressed. I had daily nurse visits, they were all lovely. Any questions I had were answered straightaway. The consultant stayed in touch too. It was much more comfortable being at home and I couldn't fault anything about it.
Very impressed
Audiology
September 11, 2023
The ENT and Audiology departments have been wonderful. I've had no issues with either and they provide really good care. I have regular appointments and they do all they can to ensure I can hear as well as I can. My new hearing aid is amazing, its a digital one and works so well, the ear piece is so comfortable.
Poor care
Accident and emergency services

The ambulance took me to A & E, on arrival at A & E I waited hours, I was freezing cold, no blanket, no food or drink, I didnt feel looked after properly. Thankfully they eventually transferred me to a ward for a couple of night which was much better.
Empathetic, caring and professional staff
Maternity

I contacted the maternity triage unit in the morning and shared the concerns I had about my pregnancy, they were empathetic, helpful and supportive on the phone and arranged an appointment for me within 30-minutes time. I arrived at the unit and was seen very quickly and greeted by friendly and professional staff, they made me feel at ease and the process for checking me out was quick and efficient. They were reassuring throughout and explained to me what was happening.
