Diagnosed with bowel cancer end of 2019
colorectal
January 24, 2025
I attended WSH for two colonoscopies at the end of 2019 when polyps were removed. One of the polyps was positive for bowel cancer. A further scan showed I had three abdominal aneurism, two of which were critical. I had to wait for six months until May 2020 to be admitted to Adenbrooke's Hospital to have these repaired as they took precedence over the bowel cancer.
After recovering from this hospital stay I attended for another colonoscopy which fortunately showed that all traces of cancer had in fact been removed and I was very relieved to be cancer free. The only downside was that if cancer was still present and part of my colon needed to be removed having the three aneurisms repaired would mean I would have to be fitted with a stoma. I'm not sure that pointing this out to me at the time was particularly wise as I became very stressed, anxious and depressed at the thought of this. I have had subsequent colonoscopies and scan which revealed I am still bowel cancer free.

Cancer care has been very good with 4-6 monthly check ups. The Macmillan nurses are wonderful and they offer great advice.
Breast cancer found by routine mammogram.

Appointment to attend for further tests just 12 days from initial mammogram. Operation for lumpectomy 3 weeks from diagnosis. Fantastic staff, even after op were there for any questions and worries. Although I had a few problems after radiotherapy with a hematoma they saw me every time I phoned straight away.

The team only meet once a week, on a Wednesday. I was seen on Friday, which meant everything was at least 10 days wait. This is torture! The team need to meet a couple of times a week so those seen on a Friday do not have to wait over a week for results etc. it took 2 months for me to start my treatment - this may not seem long but was extremely stressful and something I was unable to control
Impressed

Very impressed by the care received from staff. Do have to wait when referred but that's to be expected.

A bit of longer wait than I had expected for my cataract operation but I was happy with the care received and staff throughout.
Communication issues
January 22, 2025
The communication between the hospital and the surgery is slow and causes delays to things.

When I had my baby everything was good apart from the after care. Information wasn't easy to get, I had to chase for pain relief and was told not to pick my baby up but then staff didn't respond to the call bell so I had to pick my crying baby up.
