I have lived in Bury St Edmunds all of my life. This is the hospital I and my family come to when it becomes necessary. today I had a hearing test which was very involved and the clinician was impressive in her skills. I didn't get seen on time but I guess there was a reason for that. The hospital is and always has been, pretty good all round and has improved to become very good in the last few years. Sadly, this is where my husband died and that is what goes through my head whenever I walk through the front doors which makes any visit unpleasant. I can't really think what could be done about that though.

I find the hospital much improved though it was never bad as such. I have a chronic chest condition and I have been attending a clinic for some years. There is more parking now which is good for me as I travel from Mildenhall by car. Parking is expensive but now I can usually get a space quite easily. This may seem trivial but in the past I have hunted for a vacant parking space for 30 minutes, been late getting to the clinic and not been seen. I can see progress which is good.
Everything else is very good.
Outpatients

I came in for an outpatients appointment (hearing) which went very well and was on time. My treatment was sensitive and professional and I should be out of the car park within the hour which will help contain the fee! I've never been an inpatient so I can't rate the food. Some of the paintwork and flooring is looking a bit old and tired now though. Not the best therapeutic environment, perhaps.

McMillan Unit

I had an appointment at the McMillan Unit. Overall it was all excellent with on exception. One nurse (the same nurse for everyone in the waiting room when their turn came up) came into the waiting room and called out the name of the next patient and what she would be doing to/for them. In my case it was preparation and then weighing prior to the consultation proper. I was slightly disturbed by this and some of the older people waiting looked upset at this. I understand that names have to be used loudly so that the individual concerned can hear but details of the procedure don't need to be broadcast.

I attend the (cardiology) clinic regularly every six months and I have done so for some years. The overall quality of the service I get has improved appreciably over the last three years. It is slicker and more professional than used to be the case.

I attended for a blood test as a 'drop in' because my computer is broken so I couldn't book online as I usually do. When I booked in at the screen the message told me that the wait would be 40-50 minutes. A member of staff had the initiative to have put up a handwritten sign saying drop in tests are usually ,much quicker then the screen indicates. This was indeed the case as I was in, bloods taken and out in just over 10 minutes. Great!

The nurse at my local surgery referred me for an X ray. She told me I go without a time booked and wait to be seen. I took my book with me because I expected to be hanging around for a while. I wasn't waiting long at all! I was 5 minutes at most in the first waiting area, a member of staff called me through into (and escorted me) to the second waiting area where I barely sat down before being called in. A student radiologist was very professional in taking the X rays. She told me the results should be with my practice in seven days (there was a Bank Holiday in that time) and they were. Excellent!

I am in my eighties now and not in the greatest of health generally. My heart was the biggest difficulty for me but the consultant at West Suffolk Hospital reassured me that they could put a pacemaker in without major problems and that if I was happy to have the procedure there was no reason that I shouldn't continue to have a good life. I trusted her and she was quite right-I am much improved.

I had to have a breast screening and I was quite nervous. The staff were very professional and I was treated very sympathetically and my fears were allayed.

I went to the eye centre and they were great. Everything was explained carefully to me and I was put at ease. Very good.
