Wife with Dementia-excellent care
Dementia (cannot recall name)
February 12, 2016
My wife has a high level of dementia, and so when we ended up in hospital after an allergic reaction to penicillin it was good to have her on the ward specific to her needs. She was assessed and taken there within 24 hours. I did not know there was a specific ward for dementia patients, so was so pleased she was looked after by people who knew what to expect. She was in for 5 days and looked after well.
Ignoring the carer when information is needed
Accident and emergency services

When my husband, who has dementia, is admitted to hospital via A&E, the doctors do not read his notes and continually ask him questions which he can not answer. Even when I am there they don't ask me until I give them the information. On occasions they have gone through all the questions with no responses to any of them before coming to me. Its a complete waste of time for them to try to ask him.
Notes not read, treatment not carried out

I have in grown eye lashes so the consultant removed these at the clinic prior to having my cataract operation. Before having the operation I needed to have where the eye lashes were removed cauterized, but on the second visit to the clinic for the cauterization they removed more lashes rather than cauterizing. When I went for my operation (cataract) the surgeon did do the operation but said I would urgently need to be re referred for the cauterization as it would damage the new lens if left undone. The second doctor didn't read my notes properly so carried out the wrong procedure.

Absolutely wonderful care and treatment. I was admitted for a week and received great care. The staff had time to spend with me and they kept the atmosphere relaxed and fun. Prior to being discharged I was assessed and when home someone visited to check I could dress myself and I knew what medication I needed to be taking.
Always had good treatment at eye clinic

I recently had a cataract removed, unfortunately there were some problems so I was in theater for 1hr 20 mins. During this time I was kept informed about what was happening and reassured. Before going home I saw the consultant and he explained what I needed to do and when the follow up would be due to the complications. The appointment to look at replacing the lens is taking place tomorrow 4 weeks after the operation.

Lack of communications between staff at Ipswich hospital. Lack of staff to care for patients. One or two excellent nurses. Mainly agency staff, so no continuity of care. Left in toilet for 20 minutes - had to bang with stick on door. contracted novovirus while in. Lack of planning for discharge, despite relatives saying what was required. Left in side room and forgotten about for care and food. Moved to discharge ward (maternity ward). Care was dire. forced to walk 100 yards when could only manage 3-4 yards. Broke mental wellbeing with attitude (eg. you can mess yourself in bed or on the way to the toilet). Kidnapped by relatives after speaking to consultant's secretary.. Social services would not happen for another 2 weeks. Luckily the hospice stepped in. They were fantastic..
