Miscommunication

Orthopaedics
February 10, 2025
Had a bit of a miscommunication about when I should have surgery after having a baby. However, I called this week as I hadn't heard anything and I've been seen in a week to discuss the operation which was great. The discussion and explanation was good and now I just have to wait for the operation.

Got to hospital at around 14-45hrs and was seen by a consultant who gave me one of my Sotalol pills and done ECG on me,my heart rate was high then it dropped and she said l might be going home but they done another ECG this was at about 18-00hrs when they sent me to Majors were l was put in a cubicle on an ECG machine were y heart rate was between 80 to a 136 beats.

At 20-15hrs l was put in the corridor for 8hours until approximately 07-30hrs were l was moved to a ward (eau) were l stayed until approximately 14-30hrs when l eventually see a cardiologist doctor who told me my heart had gone back into normal rhythm but he would have a chat with is consultant to see was was going to happen. I was discharged at 22-00hrs that night.

My husband went to his GP with a dermatology concern, the GP made a referal but he heard nothing for 8-12 months this was after it was put through as urgent! he went back to the GP and the GP chased it up and they then contacted my husband quickly and he has now seen the consultant, they have sorted out a biopsy to happen now, the wait was way too long and makes you think that he got lost in the system. But at least things are on the move now, its just so worrying while you wait.

4 months ago I went to see my dentist 3 to 4 times with pain inside the tooth and jaw, after they did X rays at the dentist they determined it was an infection in the jaw and tooth, the dentist decided that I needed stronger antibiotics, they didnt give a clear directive but I then contacted my own GP surgery and explained my issue and who told me that this was not their remit to support dental problems, they told me to go back to my dentist, my dentist then told me to go to A & E, I was absolutely racked in pain at this point in my jaw. I arrived at A & E and was told by the triage nurse that I had a 9 hour wait ahead of me, we have taken photos with us. They told us that it was not their remit but it was for the Maxfacs Team, my wife and I emailed my dentist as we waited in A & E and between the A & E reception staff, the Triage nurse in A & E I had to weave what felt like a minefield. In the end someone from the Maxfacs team came to collect me from A & E, they examined me and gave me antibiotics and gave me a follow up appointment, they took a further x ray and gave me a date for late December to have a toothe extracted, I have another follow up appointment at the end of January, I am out of pain now thankfully but it has left me with a significant lump under my chin at the moment. Took some navigating but in the end the Maxfacs team did a good job.

I was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer in November 2022. I have nothing but praise for the care and treatment I had at Ipswich hospital. The consultant talked me through the procedure and despite my natural anxiety we were even able to laugh and joke about what was happening and about to happen. I had my resection done in early January and was in hospital for several days. The nursing staff on the recovery ward were so caring and helpful!!

I started chemotherapy in the hospital unit once I was discharged. Again, the chemo centre care was top notch even though I only had one treatment. I had a very bad reaction and had to be kept in overnight. The consultant was brilliant. When I said I didn't think I wanted to continue with chemo, he talked me through all the statistics based on the outcome of my operation and we came to the mutual decision that I should instead be placed on surveillance for 5 years. I've just had my latest CEA, which was clear, and I am waiting for the results of my latest CT scan. With all the scare stories about waiting times, I have absolutely no complaint. My cancer was discovered and treated within 2 and a half months and I think that is incredible!! Thank you to the whole of the staff at Ipswich hospital.

Too long a wait for diagnosis he died

Dermatology

My husband was not seen soon enough by a more senior doctor or referred soon enough by the GP. He was finally examined by a consultant from St Thomas's Hospital in London who finally found a tumour which had matastamied to his Liver and become cancer. He died a couple of months later. I had to fight every step of the way to get him the help he deserved and needed. The doctor we saw was cold brutal and had no bedside manner at all. We were shown out by a nurse and sat in the Costa coffee shop waiting for our transport crying. No one cared. After I ranted at everyone, we had a second opinion who finally decided he was a very fit man and agreed to give him a chance of chemo - and care through Hospice was the only help we received from the medical profession other than his oncologist. He was a lovely gentleman who knew how to treat people.

Firstly - my cancer diagnosis was stumbled upon by a locum GP. He looked through my notes for something else, opened a discharge letter (meant only for the GP - I was certainly not copied in), and then read out that a cancer had been found. I was shocked. He was surprised and said “haven’t they told you?”
Then, when I had my consultant appointment I was taken into a room of five people. The first one to introduce herself was “the cancer nurse specialist” (so had I not already known, I’d have guessed), then one by one they introduced themselves. The consultant said something along the lines of “we found a cancer” and then showed me photographs from scans and other investigations.
After a while, I was asked to follow the cancer specialist nurse. We went into another room and the nurse gave me a folder. She kept rummaging through a cabinet and giving me sheets of paper. I asked “when I’ve had time to take this in, can I ring you to discuss my questions?”. I was shocked by her reply “no, not really. If you read the booklets, you’ll find answers to everything “. Then she said that she had to get back to clinic so she showed me out.
Any support or help I have received has come from friends, family or by reading articles on the internet. I feel I have been shown some kindness by support staff and receptionists at the hospital, but generally the “professionals” have displayed a lack of courtesy, respect and compassion. Many of them have told me how important and clever they are, and of course, how many qualifications they have but in terms of knowing or listening to me - they certainly have not taken the time. I feel unheard, dismissed and largely disrespected.
