A better medication only offered on request

Cardiology
August 17, 2016
Recently diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation and I was offered Warfarin. I knew of a newer and I thought possibly better medicine alternative, when I asked about this alternative it was then offered instead. I can't understand why it wasn't offered first.

Thank you for leaving your comments, without knowing the full story I can not comment on why the medication was not offered in the first instance, however I am pleased that working with the doctor you managed to get the medication that was best suited for your needs. Many Thanks

Poor treatment explanation

Ear Nose and Throat
August 17, 2016
I was kept waiting an hour for a consultation appointment. I was explained my mastoid operation but told I was not able to have a general due to my other health problems. I was asked if I had any questions I said that there was only one and that was if I could have some sort of sedation as I am a very nervous person. I was told no and that a letter would be written to my GP to say I had refused surgery (which I haven't). I was asked certain questions about my medication which was all in my records. This has since made me lose all confidence with the operation and would like to see a better way of reassuring patients that are nervous.

Dear Mrs Milsom, I am sorry to read about your experience, it must be very daunting coming into hospital and I can understand that this experience would not have eased your worries. I would like to look into this further but for me to do this I need some more information. Could you please give me a call on 01473 702101. Kind Regards Steve Bruce

Good overall care

Accident and emergency services

Rushed in to hospital (A&E) had lots of tests & doctor sent me home saying nothing was wrong with me. Next day my GP rang to tell me an ambulance was taking me back. They had discovered I had a bacterial infection in my lungs & bladder & bowel. In for 5 weeks. My care in each ward was amazing. I recall being at dementia ward first then moved many times, but they looked after me well. Soap dispensers in disabled toilets are up too high for wheelchair users.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences, both the good and the bad. It is great to hear when the care a patient receives care that exceeds their expectations. I hope you are making a speedy recovery, if you could let me know the wards you were on I will look into the possibility of getting the soap dispensers moved. Please give me a call on 01473 702101. Many Thanks

Shocking communication between depts

Husband went in for perforated bowel. The operation as was an emergency. During surgery they caught his spleen & caused major bleed and so they had to remove it. Now on permanent anti-biotics, Nursing team amazing. Communication between depts is shocking. In April 2016 he was in for the urine retention & they did heart scan. Took 2 weeks to get results. In meantime he saw doctor who didn't know it had been done.

Poor attitude and patient care

Ophthalmology
August 16, 2016
I was told that I needed an eye operation but that there was a potential that it would not be wholly successful and that it would accelerate my cataracts. Subsequent to the operation i did experience problems which I thought would be sorted by a cataract operation. However problems continued after the cataract operation but my consultant said I should go to my opticians (Boots). I was told there that I still had problems that they couldn't deal with and they declined to prescribe new lens. I had to return to hospital for a prescription from the optician there. I felt my consultant had not taken my problems seriously so I made a formal complaint. As part of this I saw a different consultant who identified the problem and took the appropriate action. I am disappointed that the original attitude was so dismissive and that I was forced to complaint to get appropriate treatment.

Make you feel at ease.

This is not the onlytime I have had treatment at the hospital and on every occasion I have been treated extremely well by all the staff and they make you feel at ease. Fortunately I have not had to stay overnight so I cannot comment on Hospital food but they are very caring people (cataract surgery)

Not kept in formed.

The instructions issued before the appointment asked for someone to accompany the patient. My husband was not kept informed of my progress and that caused unnecessary stress. Others were kept informed I suppose but the information at check in suggested that everyone would be kept informed of progress.

The treatment was clearly explained

My treatment was for removal of "film" in right eye. The procedure was clearly explained and today the sight in that eye is better than the left.
I was recommended by the optician, my appointment at the hospital was soon after. Given the negative reports about cataract operations being delayed, I think this was very good
